When I think about the mid easts' past history I cannot help but feel that they do not know peace without bloodshed. Not to say that there has been no bloodshed in Iraq, but I dont think that the American way of building Democracy in Iraq is keeping within in the past history of the region. I think to be more effective in Iraq the rules of engagement need to be changed, I dont think that the current rules are set up in a way that is biased (for lack of a better word) towards the troops. I think we have tried to put the people of Iraq before our troops, and in turn there has been bloodshed against our soldiers that would not have occured otherewise.

For the most part I agree. You just said it a whole lot better than I did.

I think our military can do the job. But when the critism starts our military has a tendency to imedietely create rules that restrict our troops too much.
When I was in I always hated knee jerk reactions and did the best I could to avoid them. Of course that didn't set well with a lot of the officers I had to work for.

Can Iraq succeed as a Democracy? I think it can if you can get the Religious Leaders to pull their collective head out and help make it work.
