Re: Sound coming from the front end???
I know this sounds crazy, but mine was making a similar noice and it ended up being the left upfront rubber grommet that the hood sits on.. I just turned it down two turns and the noice went away.. I heard the noice when I would turn at low speeds and when going over bumps.... It was driving me nuts... Sounded like something was crackling in the suspension..

Re: Sound coming from the front end???
I have had a similar issue. Sometimes there would be (and still is as the issue isn't resolved) a popping noise coming from the steering column, but sounded like it was under the hood rather than in the truck. It was especially noticeable when turning at slow speeds, and going over any sort of uneven surface made it only that much worse. In warmer weather it's really apparent, especially in slower city-driving conditions.
The techs at Sewell here in Dallas have shown me the problem, and have tried to fix it by, on one visit by replacing the upper intermediate steering shaft, and once by rotating and tightening the bolt that connect the upper and lower shafts.
What I'm hearing is the shaft flexing and popping under stress. After the second visit to the service dept. I thought things were fixed for good. But, the noise has just come back now...a little over a month later.
I watched the tech reach up under the hood and grab on the upper and lower shaft to show me how any stress on it made the popping noise.
I told him thanks for recreating it...now make it go away.
So I'm about to take it in again, as soon as I have some time.
Anyway, this could be what you're hearing.

Re: Sound coming from the front end???
Mine has been in the shop for the third time for this same problem. They have called GM in Detroit and they are saying it is characteristic of the H3 to do this. Certain driving conditions make it happen. I am not real happy with that but from what it sounds like it's doing it on most of the H3.

Re: Sound coming from the front end???
It sounds like it might be a torsion bar problem. I work for MBZ and the ML's have the same problem. There is a plastic bushing that supports the torsion bar keys. When the plastic cracks, it makes the same type of noise. I dont know if GM torsions are built the same way but it might be something to look into.

Re: Sound coming from the front end???
Open the hood look at the firewall. There are some long skinny steel black tubes (I am not sure what they are for) they run the length of the firewall.
They are not far down almost at the top. These tubes are put in on little plastic cheesy mounts. They can easily pop out and luckily easily pop back in. Because of their location they sound horrible when you hit bumps (if loose). Check these out and make sure they are secure.

those tubes are the brake lines. carefull with them! i had the little pipe pop out of one of its claps and was making a rattling noise, easy to pop back in, but be careful not to bent the line, its not strong.

Re: Sound coming from the front end???
I have the same noise but notice it more when it is very cold. I just had an H3 for a rental and it made the same noise.
