Re: Good, reliable, reasonably priced shotgun...
Get a good used Remington 870.
Straight forward operation, easy to learn and operate, breaks down for cleaning and goes back together easily. It suits the purpose you stated well. You probably will never need to fix it, but if you do all the parts are readily available and every gun store is familiar with them.
Mossberg 590's are decent, they have had some trouble with the safety in the past. They hold a tight pattern.
Shotguns can put a lot of rounds down range in a hurry. 000 buck rounds have eight .36 caliber pellets in each round (in the popular 2 3/4", more if you go up to 3", but probably not necessary), that's a lot of lead heading downrange at once. With a little practice you can get several rounds off in two seconds. A 1 once slug is another option, and is generally a one shot assailant stopper.
Rifles rock, but for close up work, shotguns kick ass.
Edit: I forgot to add that EVERYONE speaks shotgun.

with all 03H3 says. Though a brand new 870 would not be a bad option, as they are not that expensive, and you get the new shotgun smell.

Re: Good, reliable, reasonably priced shotgun...
Mossberg 500 with pistol grip. 12 Gauge loaded with 00 buckshot. Told my wife, anyone comes in, just rack the slide. Not too many sounds are quite as distinctive as the racking of a slide on a 12 gauge. Not the most accurate long range gun, but home invasion encounters are normally within 5 to 20 feet.

Re: Good, reliable, reasonably priced shotgun...
BLUEHUMMER - looks like a percussion cap shotgun. Based on that fact, the barrels could be suspect for safe operation due to the old manufacturing techniques.
My advice for valuation is to simply take them to a gun show. There are normally dealers at the shows that will know the gun and can value them for you. Have done it many times with "unknown" finds.
If you are ever around pittsburgh, the PA Gun Collectors always has a nice show, it happens i belive 6 times a year.

Re: Good, reliable, reasonably priced shotgun...
Great article. I again concur on the mossberg 500. I dont have the ventilated heat shield on mine. Whats nice is its short and you can manuever indoors if need be without having a large stock and barrell to whip around.
I'm also partial to Glocks for protection. I carry one daily. They always go bang.
