I would find a speaker that requires the very least amount of air space and see if you can build a box to fit under that seat that will support the requirements...... probably not gonna hit like a box in the rear of an SUV but will still sound very nice. Problem with the small enclosure speakers is that they usually need alot of power so you may be looking at needing another amp.
$600 does sound pretty steep but how elaborate is the enclosure they are building..... if its got some goofy cuts/molding then it could get up into that range. If you have access I would check a few more shops that are capable of that kind of work and see if you can get a better deal.
