Just wanted to wish all the GM employees on here good luck today. Hopefully Black Tuesday does not effect any of you.

When life deals you lemons, make lemonade. I went through a corporate downsizing in 2001 with a communications company. Out of the blue, called to a meeting in the morning and given a severance package. Security guards watched each employee as they packed up and escorted them out the building. Totally unexpected and blew me away.

The GOOD news is 5 years later I have the job of my dreams . . . there's no looking back.

Hope y'all don't have to go through what I did, but just know that there's life after layoff. You're in my thoughts and prayers, folks.

Maybe we can all pitch in a little to keep our fellow forum members that are GM employees employed

Still a GM worker, but we were informed today, our group will be targeted later in the month of April.
I'm at the point in my life, it would not bother me too much. I just wish they would get it all over with as soon as possible.
I'm planning on getting out in two or three years anyway, so if they gave me a 15 month severance package, I guess I could not complain too much. Hell, they already f'ed up my pension.

No lump sum to walk away, no packages, straight firing is what they are doing to cut the salary workforce.
They will give a person one month severance for each year worked, up to a maximum of 15 months, for 15 years or greater service. The severance does include health insurance, as it exists when let go. Does not include anymore contributions to the retirement, but GM's contributions are cut way down to any retirement as of Jan. 1 of next year.
In some ways I feel I won't be cut this year, or next, but the following year I will be, and if it is in 08 when they let me go, that would be ideal.
However, one thing I have learned, no matter how critical your job is, you can be let go at any time, so I do not feel secure until all the heads are cut this year.
Hell, I'm 58, worked for GM for 15 years now, and I have a small retirement from a little over 15 years with the Federal Government, so I won't be hurting too bad.
However, if I do get cut, I won't have access to GM's service manual anymore , so won't be able to help anyone out in that regard.
Time will tell, I just wish they would get it all over with ASAP, and let all of us get on with our lives.

Good luck to all. This type of cutting was all too common in Silicon Valley during the last 5 or 6 years.
