I wouldn't downplay it.
Almost 116,000 Americans gave their lives "just coming in at the end" of the war.
Besides that many sacrificed doesn't seem like they had it in the bag.

Thank the French for sending the money and troops. You guys were on the brink of being wiped out. That's why we don't understand why the hate for the French when you guys have French running through your veins.
