Kentucky Man Sets Cockroach-in-Mouth Record

Among the world records out there to break, putting the most three-inch cockroaches in one's mouth would seem to be one of the least appetizing to attempt. But this was the feat Kentuckian Travis Fessler chose to mark his place in history ... Sort of.


Fessler -- whose day job is a professional sword swallower and fire-eater -- placed 11 Madagascar hissing cockroaches in his mouth and held it closed for the obligatory 10 seconds. The bugs measured over 2 1/2 inches in length, and, as per the rules, all survived the stunt.

"One of them tried to crawl down my throat," Fessler said of the attempt. "That made me gag quite badly. It was difficult not to be sick but I held it in and saw it through to the end." The new world record holder said he didn't want to swallow them because he is a vegetarian.

After the stunt, it was unclear who was troubled more by the experience -- the man who put roaches in his mouth, the tortured bugs or the judges who preside over these sorts of record attempts as a profession.
