I would use a marine primer and enamel on your front skid, but I wouldn't worry about doing a thing to your rear dif cover. What is the purpose to coating it? No matter what, I wouldn't spray over the bolts. I mean you could get them off if you needed to, but there's just no reason to mess with it.

The back cover is UGLY!!! Not sure how it came factory...but it is pealing and just looks ugly!! want to make it look nicer and thought that this spray would be stronger when I do hit a rock...

Get a spray can of black Rustoleum. It's durable, won't affect taking off the bolts, prevents rust, and has fish oil in it as one of its ingredients that makes it more chip resistant than most enamels.
