The video of, i forget what his name was, breaking his axel/wheels while doing the rock crawling has made it to www.collegehumor.com. Under the wonderful caption of "Your Hummer isn't as tough as it looks." Also a few months ago they had the picture of that crash in Alaska with the caption, "Next time you see an H2, give it the finger" I hate this kind of negative press personaly, and I thought you guys might want to see it.

After the last time of having a ****box Jeep cherokee go out of his way to flip me off I decided to carry a small rock (a little bigger than a quarter) in the slot near the gear selector. It's kind of a growing habit to drive with the little rock in my right hand waiting for the next nitwit to flip me off. It's amazing how good of a shot I am with a quick undetectable flip of the wrist.
I thought about carrying a paintball gun, but that's all we H2 owners don't need.

especialy considering that I am a paintball player on the national circuit, and that would just hurt the images in two of my hobbies.

Being flipped off is become a normal occurance for me. Every time I see another SUV comming the other way, I get tunnel vision. After awhile, it gets easy!

so i was checking out the video and i noticed that once your traction control system detected front wheel spin it kicked in the tire with traction, causing the tire to break the tie rod. Is there a way you could disable the traction control system and install ARB air lockers front and rear? Then you could control when and where the tires were locked in. The front end would last a whole lot longer and you could take the H2 way more places with less damage...

having just broken a tie rod, I'm not sure that a wheel gaining traction is enough to break one, it is a little under-sized for a vehicle of 6500+ lbs bouncing over boulders, but still the biggest one GM puts in their trucks. I had to slam mine pretty hard on a side slope to break it. However, I must admit that I am not as experienced as some here on the forum (you). I haven't seen the video, but I thought a rock flipped up and nailed it?

forgot to mention that I agree with your notion of front lockers being way cool. A few here have installed lockers
on their trucks. I'd love to hear a progress report?

You are 1/2-right....the TC did sense the slippage and suddenly sent the juice/torque to the other wheel. The real problem was that the wheel was jjjjjjjjjust ppppperfectly perched that it had traction only on its outside tread.

You see...the tire is so darn wide that traction on the outside (excluding the middle and inner area) leads to actually push/rotate the tire inwards.....that extreme push inwards thrust is what did it in.

Honestly...Alec is a great driver (I'd almost let him drive my ride)...it was just a fluke thing that his tire was pivoted against that rock as such to drive it inwards like that.

We already have E-lockers on our rear. There are some after-markets supposedly available for our fronts, but I don't know of anyone having done it yet. Also...we can't disable our TC systems.

We walk a fine line between using momentum and trying to keep our speed.....yet not hammering the power too much. In a 3-ton+ rig and a very isolated cabin...it isn't easy!

I know poor Alec is agonizing over both the mistake that day on the trail and the unintentional release of his screw-up....which has spread like wild-fire and circulated over the entire globe...only to bring a fierce and deliberate ridicule to our precious H2's....

I fully expect to see that piece as an unknown author entry for America's funniest home videos.

Steve, reading your last post I realized that it seems the exact same thing may have caused my breakage...I stand corrected RockYoda.

I was going through a large dip about half way up a steep rutted hill. Coming out of the dip made my front drivers side tire come off the ground (about 2 to 3 ft according to a video from a previous trip) -- at that moment the TC system sent all the power to the other front tire, which was only making contact on the outer edge on the slope to the right. I'm still amazed that I actually made it the rest of the way up the hill with the severely bent tie rod. I was afraid of backing down such a steep hill with f'd up steering -- not to keen on rolling.

At least now I know what probably happened. Thanks guys!

In Alec's case it was heroic, stoic and brave....but your instance was entirely stupidity, neglect and carelessness.

Hey....it happens. These things weigh some 3+ tons and have to use a lot of power to get them around. With barely being able to see more then 6 feet in front of you....it's tough to keep things in order.

What's important is that your alright, your rig will live to see another day...and that you buy the beers next time we meet!

Thanks Steve; indeed, beers on me.

The only bad thing about this whole experience is that the dealer washed my truck -- after so meticulously placing mud in all the right places (basically everywhere). I was looking forward to showing up at the hummer happening this weekend with my dirty truck, shredded tires, pinstriping, hound dog and sexy second cousin in the passenger seat.

A note on your comment about only seeing 6 or so ft in front of us...I remember a maxi-mog link on this forum many moons ago with under-the-truck mounted waterproofed ccd cameras to see tire placement. Interesting.

The rock idea brings back memories. In the past I have used nickels because I always had them in my coin tray. They are just heavy enough and they fly great, furthermore, nickels suck and are no longer considered real currency so next time some twiggy armed geek flips you off give him a nickel ding he can remember. We've got to get together more often and offroad! Hey....check out my post on UNBREAKABLE..stock tie-rods break at the point where they are about 1/2" in diameter. You can't tell looking at the pic, but those bad-boys are just over 1 1/4" thick!

If you want to have some fun with idiots, you could do what we did in high school...

1. Strap a couple of small PVC pipes on the roof, facing forward.
2. Run some electrical wire from the cab to the rear of each pipe.
3. Connect a momentary on button to the wire in the cab, then to 12V.
4. On the other end, wrap a single strand of copper wire around the fuse of the bottle rocket, then bridge the wire with the ends of the strand.
5. Insert the bottle rocket in the back end of the PVC pipe.

Instant Rocket Launcher!
