I got my new rims and tires a few weeks back(35x13.50-20 procomp xtreme all terrain) and i am happy with them but when i get around 55mpg i get a little shake in my steering wheel. The truck as a whole does not vibrate, but i can defintely feel it in my steering wheel where this was not an issue when running the stock tires/rims. Personally i can live with it, however i happen to be amongst you married folks and it drives her nuts(that i paid that much for tires and rims and now my steering wheel shakes and it didnt before). I went down to the local Big 10 tires and they say they can re-balance them for $20/tire but cannot make any promises that it will help and quite frankly he doesnt think it will. What do you guys feel about this? Should i be able to get these tires to balance up just as good as a stock tire/rim where you feel no vibration through the wheel or elsewhere?

Yep, and I think I have now blown just about all of my stick-on weights off with the pressure washer.

You might want to check your rotors. They may not be running true...and also the balance may be off as well..Check those 2 and you should have your answer..

Im going to bring my truck to a local 4x4 shop next week. Im thinking these guys will know how to make it ride super smooth again(the ride REALLY isnt bad, just not perfect) as they are used to doing these setups.

Phil, after my first trailduty purchase, i must say im impressed with the speed and service of your staff. Maybe when i get my staps in ill find a reason to use them.

Boss:

I was just about to buy the Xtreme All Terain for my tow vehicle--let me know if it is the tires themselves--probably not but it is a newer tire on the market.

Thanks.

HGW....i doubt it is the tires but ill let you know. The shake is at a minimum so i would suspect a small amount of time from someone who is used to dealing with this kind of set up will fix the problem. I will let you know the tires themselves are pretty sweet--much more aggressive than any other all terrain ive seen(esp. the toyo's and nitto's which seem to be so populur) and they have a nice looking sidewall. As far as road noise, you can hear them but not much louder than stock. I also like the fact that they are a little wider than most tires of the same height.

Boss:

I doubt it is the tires also--thanks for the feedback--I am going to get a set.

I have the Xterains sitting here in my shop--I liked them too and will put them on one Hummer or another.

I suspect it is a balancing issue---a good shop can spin balance them and look hard for the wobble. If you don't want to wait, put the fronts on the back and vice versa--see if it changes anything.

I went and had my tires balanced today by a truck shop used to rigs like this. It now rides smooth as glass. They said there was nothing to it and minor adjustments fixed the problem.

Once you get to a certain set of sizes, a truck shop that specializes in large tires will be invaluable in getting the balance right on tires.

I get mine done at a local 4x4 shop that can do tires up to 44's. I also run Centramatics, so that when I chew up a tire or lose weights (and I've had both happen while off roading!), the Centramatics will correct any minor balancing issues until I can get the tires rebalanced.
