Just checking. I have a 5-spd. My truck has a high pitch sound in gears 1 - 2. A whining sound. Kinda like other big trucks I hear on the intersate. 4 - 5 sound ok. Anyone else have a high pitch in lower gears? Is this normal?
Thanks

The Monsoon and XM prevent me from hearing any vehicle noises!
But seriously, I have an automatic and don't here anything with the radio off, not too many guys here have the 5spd but maybe they will answer this for you.

I have a 5spd on order and I test-drove it for the 2nd time yesterday.
I didn’t notice it the first time I drove it, but yesterday I couldn't believe how noticeable it was. It almost sounds like its straining, like it cant wait to get to 3rd gear or something.

I have a 5 speed. It's normal and not just with H3's. Other vehicles do this too.

FWIW- I know others have posted that same noise with the earlier H3's (automatic though) and turned out to be a new rear end. Their are posts about the noise getting louder and louder until "DONE." I'm not sure on the manual, but it was an issue in the past. You may ant to do a search on that one.

I hear the whine in my 5 spd too. Mostly in 1st and 2nd gear between 2000-2500 rpm.
Hoping it doesn't get worse and evolve into needing a new rear like a few others.
I think its probably normal, but reading the earlier threads about the problem rear end has made me paranoid.

Unless gear box noise is really loud i wouldnt worry about it,Its when it changes pitch....thats when you look into it
My H3 with its 5 speed is smooth...alot less noise than any other standard transmissions.
ive bang through the gears through.

well these H3's are geared really low. You probably hear it at the lower speeds due to that. such as faster your going, you wouldnt hear it. Mine makes a little whine hear and there, and I have a whole new axle. Hummer told me it's just geared low, and that they all sound like that. and on top of it, the 4 year warranty. No worries man

True. Geared low + 4 yr warranty = no worries.
Thanks to everyone for your replies.
