Texas driver killed by falling rock
By Rocky Mountain News
August 1, 2006

A 62-year-old Texas man died Sunday in a freak accident when he was hit in the head by a rock that rolled off a hillside while he was driving on Ouray County Road 361, also known as the Yankee Boy Basin road.

The State Patrol reported that James Parker of Rowlett, Texas, was driving a Jeep Rubicon on the scenic 4-wheel drive road when a large rock fell from the embankment and crashed into the top left of the driver?s door, penetrating through and hitting Paker in the head, killing him instantly.

A passenger in his vehicle, Nancy Ingle, 56, also of Rowlett, grabbed the steering wheel and turned the vehicle away from a 300-foot drop.
The Jeep traveled up an embankment and rolled onto its right side.
Ingle suffered a fractured wrist but her quick action saved her life, the patrol said.

Investigators believe recent rains in the area dislodged the rock.
Parker and Ingle were on a Jeep tour with friends who were following behind them when the accident took place.

I was just in that area a month ago! They had some of the roads closed because of the mud/land slides in the area (Blackbear Pass).

Damn, I was there a month ago. Guess a hard hat is part of the off-roading equipment.
