no you don't get free updates. also if the dvd you currently have gets damaged be prepared to spend $300. i keep mine in the radio at all times. the only time that it would be covered under warranty is if it stops reading and it;s not all scratched up.

I don't have a nav system but just wondering, would it be possible to back-up your dvd if you've got a burner? Especially if the discs cost that much. It's only cost less than a buck to back it up...unless it's a dual layer, then a few bucks...

Yes, you can back it up with a dual layer disk. Still does not help when they update the DVD to the next version.

So, i'm guessing that the dvd's are head-unit specific? Or can the same dvd be used within the same brand..ie pioneer or alpine etc...

They've got 16x dual layer burners at staples for $40 bucks after rebate. Pretty good burner, haven't had any problems with it yet...

I haven't tried it, but it shouldn't be a problem to copy it for backup purposes. I would hate to lose it and have to purchase a new one. A backup copy makes sense. If it has any type of protection scheme, there should be programs out there to take care of it (ie dvd shrink)...so I've heard.

It is not problem making your own backup copy using the dual layer dvd. You can not compress it like movie. It must be a one for one copy and it is a little of 8 gigs in size, hence the need for the dual layer disk. Use a program like DVD Decrypter,(freeware), rip an image of the disk and then burn the image to your blank dual layer DVD. Done.
Now back to my orginal question, does anyone know if GM part number, 10389450 version 4.0 DVD will work in the H2? I believe it works on the Caddie, which may be a different Navigation system.

Will the local Caddie dealership let you try it out there?
