Anyone have a personal protection dog?
Just wondering if anyone on the board has a personal protection dog and if so which breeder/kennel you worked with. And if so what your experience has been. From what I have found most trainers use the GSD, and some use the Belgiun Malinous (sp?). I'm not really looking to go that route, I'll stick to my Dobermans. I dont really want to go down the puppy road again, I dont have time for a puppy so I'm looking for a trained adult that is about 2-3 years of age.

Re: Anyone have a personal protection dog?
We have a mean, badazz protection dag that will bark at anything and isn't afraid to attack! She'll eat anything that gets in her way using her giant, powerful jaws! We even take her on trips for protection.
Here's a pic of her on the way home from Tellico. RAAAAaarrrr!!!!:
Seriously, PM Paragon as his is trained. There's a vid around here somewhere of the dog attacking.

Re: Anyone have a personal protection dog?
Our Pug furiously attacked a German Shepard mix the other day. It ran away in fear as the English Mastiff got in on the fight. Never expected the little tater-tot to begin attacking something three times it's size.

Not meaning to hijack your thread, Carey, but small dogs are stupid brave. They just don't get it.
We had a neighbor with a protection trained Dobey. That dog was SICK!

Re: Anyone have a personal protection dog?
Yes, I feel bad for going off topic as well. But small dogs are really stupid brave. The pug stands directly in front of the tires if it's outside when I come down the driveway. Run right up and just stands there... doing it's "trying to bark" thing.

Re: Anyone have a personal protection dog?
Our GSD was trained and goes back from time to time to Alpha K-9 http://www.alphak9.com/ here in Jackson. Very well known and respected.
Randy, the owner, has been on David Letterman with his dogs, has books, videos etc. and trains many of the working dogs around here.
They have various breeds at times and do have GSDs that are trained and above puppy stage. Tell him I sent you and he'll treat you well and charge at least twice as much.

Re: Anyone have a personal protection dog?
No offense taken Ken. I agree some of those little dogs can be downright nasty. Some of the most fierest dogs I have met are little minuature dogs. But, I'm looking for something with man stopping power and I wont find that in a little dog, at least not to the level that I desire.

Re: Anyone have a personal protection dog?
Thanks for the link Paragon, I'll be sure to check him out. Seems like some of the more reputable people in the business that I have come across. I'm sure that there are a bunch of people in the business that employ training "techniques" that I would have a major problem with. I dont want some back yard trainer that just beats the sh*t out of the dogs.
It still blows me away how much these dogs can cost. There is a trainer about an hour away from my house ( www.ultimatek9.com) I was blown away with what his dogs can do, and floored with how close he was to me. But when he finally got around to responding to my email, to tell me his dogs started at 10,500 and went up to 35,500, I almost choked.
Right now the trainer that I am leaning twoards is http://www.mrazovack9.com/us/. They have a US partner in Arkansas, which is not too terribely far away from me, but I will have to talk to them much more before I would commit to anything.

Be careful Carey, sometimes Dogs like that can haul off and mangle a neighbors hand or something. Where as a little one just might crap in a friends suitcase.
What do you need it for?

Battlehardened purpleheart-honored Marines, nonetheless.
Luckily his dog goes to Alpha K-9 also.

Re: Anyone have a personal protection dog?
Train him yourself........
Your average person is very capable of training your dog to protect your family and property. It just takes patience, understandging the breed your working with, good knowledge about "dog training" and patience.....
I wish I could have afforded to send my Akita or Germ SHep to one of those schools though........

Re: Anyone have a personal protection dog?
Oh I agree these dogs can be quite the liablilty. I have a fence around most of my yard right now, but I will be ripping it down to put up a larger one. I'd like to put up a five foot tall fence around the entire yard. Oh and fencing is F'ING EXPENSIVE for those that did not know. Either way it'll get replaced, the kennel that I am leaning twoards working with now mandates that you have a fenced yard.
The dog that I want is not a guard dog. I dont want a mean dog. I want a dog that is friendly to those that I am friendly with, and not to those that I am not friendly with. A personal protection dog is supposed to be a social out going dog, but at the same time one that will take out the trash when need be.
As to why exactly I want a protection dog is a combination of alot of things, and a very long story. Its not really something I would post out on the list. To keep it simple I'll just say I've had some bad experiences.

Re: Anyone have a personal protection dog?
Though I do agree that it is not hard to train a dog to bite if one did desire. But, I do not feel that its a good idea. When training a dog for protection work, you are litleraly creating a weapon. If the dog is not trained properly it can work against rather then with you. Personally, I would not build a handgun, nor would I train a dog to bite, either are too much liablilty from my standpoint. I've always had a nack with dogs, I've never had a hard time training one, or handling one. And at the end of the day, I would feel much safer know the person that trained the dog has been doing it for 20 or 30 years as opposed to me who read a book or watched a couple of videos.

Come on! Tell us! If you could trick your enemies into whacking the dog with a hose everyday for a month or two, I think you might just create the perfect protection dog. I heard about doing that on the tv awhile ago, except it was a cracka that hired a black man to do it.
