Default AVIC-D2 - Chime Retention & Backup Camera Questions

Hello all,

I searched, but had no luck finding answers to my 2 questions.

I just got my Pioner AVIC-D2 unit installed with a Chime Retention Module (I believe it is PAC, not Peripheral). A few questions for you experts out there:

1. Should the "chime" sound different than what it sounded like with the Factory Radio installed ? My "chime" sounds way different now. The installer told me that it was not possible to retain the same "factory chime sound" because the chime was now going through the module and not the factory speakers/system???

Is that true or is he just BS-ing me?

Also, are the PAC and Peripheral modules any DIFFERENT in terms of how the chime sounds?

2. I also had a backup camera put in, but the quality of the picture is not great. I have had a LOT better quality backup cameras on other cars. The camera they installed was the SAVV RV7000. I originally wanted the OEM Pioneer Camera (ND-BC1), but they talked me out of it. In your guys' opinion, is the Pioneer Camera higher quality than the SAVV camera?

Thanks in advance all!!!

Also, are the PAC and Peripheral modules any DIFFERENT in terms of how the chime sounds? No idea, but would guess; Yes. Most people don't try both modules. Maybe an installer can tell you who has used both modules.

2. I also had a backup camera put in, but the quality of the picture is not great. I have had a LOT better quality backup cameras on other cars. The camera they installed was the SAVV RV7000. Again, most will use one camera so hard to compare. I'm satisified with the Pioneer. Picture is clear unless aimed directly at sunlight, decent night vision with backup lights on.
Thanks in advance all!!!

I just installed a new system and speakers, the chime is much different, along with the sound of the phone and On-Star. As far as the rear view camera, I didn't have that installed.

Thanks for the replies!!!

One more thing:

Does anyone know if the PAC Chime Retention Module have a volume control switch/knob on it like the Peripheral module does?

Sorry...one last thing:

f5fstop (or any other Pioneer camera owner):

Does the camera mount with screws or just adhesive tape? If it only mounts with tape, I would think it would be susceptible to coming off pretty easily or always needing to be readjusted...thanks again in advance!!!

The Pioneer camera comes with a small bracket, similar to a hinge. The camera mounts to the bracket with small screws, and the bracket can be mounted with screws, two-sided tape, or two-sided tape and a large tie-strap. I mounted the bracket to the top of the trailer hitch, then strapped it for insurance with a large (3/8 inch wide) tie-strap.

Thanks again. So, I COULD mount it with screws if I felt that was the best/most secure way?

What is that on the front of your camera? It looks like electrical tape or something. Maybe I just have really bad eyes!!!!!

The picture was taken before I removed the plastic protective covering strip that was on the face of the camera. Sunlight makes it look like it is cracked.
You can see the wiring harness, enclosed in electrical conduit, running to the left of the camera.

f5fstop et al:

If I replace my SAVV camera with the Pioneer camera, are the cable and connections all the same? In other words, does a new/different cable have to be run throughout the entire car for the Pioneer camera or are the cable/connections the same for every rear view camera?

Thanks again!!!!

Where they connect into the back of the unit, yes, but from the camera to the unit; not sure. The pioneer comes from the camera to a small converter box with one cable. From that box, it comes out with the RCA plug cable to the AVIC, and then a ground and power wire.

RJ,
Waiting for my AVIC-D2 to be deliverd. Question for you on your install findings. Was it similar to what F5 detailed in his install of his AVIC?

I would be happy to help, I am jusy not sure exactly what you are asking.

Happy Thanksgiving All!!!!

Thanks RJ,

Other,
Specifics concern wiring. Did you splice into the existing harness pins and how so...
Was the wiring coded similar in terms of C2 interface question on terminal E pin? On your rig.

Camera,
Did you run your cables/wires the same routes as F5 in his plan?

Chime
" same runs & same mounting by glove box of module?

Any other lessons learned you car to share. Not looking to drill any new/unneeded holes or solder splash any wires not required... The D2 should have less then the Z1 but still wondering.

LOL.....I didnt do the installation. I had it done at a Pioneer dealer. I am way too dumb to have installed it myself. But...everything you mentioned above sounds really impressive to me!!!

I would hazard to guess that the wiring for the basic D2 is the same as for the basic Z1 (basic=without any added devices like bluetooth/iPod. etc.).
If you have Monsoon, it should be the same as mine. You have an adapter of some type to fit in between the radio and the factory connectors, you need a vehicle speed sensor wire; however, you will not need the Z1 module I used to bypass the lockout features of the AVIC Z1.
If you have a Monsoon, you will have the same number of outputs and inputs required.
The only differences between a D2 and the Z1 are the larger screen, hard drive and other features.

Thanks F5,
Just recieved the unit and inspected the wiring. The D2 looks standard wondering how to best interface to the GM connectors 1&2.
WHERE IS THE REVERSE LEAD CONNECTION PIN?
On Wire connections in general, not to concerned regarding speaker connections but others seem a mix bag of ways...
Solder?
Splice?
Pig Tail?
Pin direct to connectors.
Or did you have a kit connector
Not planning on tearing it up till next weekend so no rush on answer
