Default Toyota Tacoma and Hummer (Unknown Model)

Multi-car crash sends two to hospital, closes Route 67

UNION-TRIBUNE BREAKING NEWS TEAM

POWAY ? A head-on collision on state Route 67 sent two people to the hospital and prompted the closure of much of the highway for nearly three hours early Wednesday, authorities said.

The accident, which was reported around 10:15 a.m., involved as many as five vehicles, according to witnesses.

Authorities closed SR-67 in both directions. The roadway was reopened to all traffic shortly after 1 p.m.

A 60-year-old man driving a Toyota Tacoma, heading northbound on SR-67 near Chaparral Way, crossed the center line and his truck hit a southbound Hummer head-on, said sheriff's Sgt. Chuck Battle.

Sheriff's officials said they found methadone inside the Toyota and are investigating the accident as a possible driving-under-the-influence case.

The driver of the Toyota had to be extricated from the truck and suffered serious internal injuries and a possible fractured leg, sheriff's officials said.

He was flown by helicopter to a hospital, Battle said.

A second injured person was transported by ambulance to a hospital for treatment. The extent of his or her injuries were not known. A witness said the injured person was in the Hummer that was struck.

Oscar Miranda, a Ramona resident who was headed to Mesa College, said he saw the Toyota clip the left front fender of a southbound Hummer. Then the Toyota struck his car, he said.

The accident involved at least five vehicles, two of which suffered heavy damage, Miranda said.

I liked this quote from the article: "The driver of the Toyota had to be extricated from the truck, the Hummer driver merely spilled his coffee, sheriff's officials said.

I hope they're both all right, but how about these alternate headlines ...

"Eco-rage in U.S. reaches new high with San Diego attack"

"Toyota crushes median flowers defending highway from Hummer"

"Bravery of Toyota driver against Hummers inspires schoolchildren"

"Medical methadone ineffective at curbing ecoterror flashback, 2 hospitalized"

"Highway closed after bizarre twist in 'pay-it-forward' movement"
