I went 4 wheeling this weekend and as soon as I started descending a pretty big hill, the airbag light came on. I brought it to the dealer on Tuesday and they checked it out. They said the code was from the rollover sensor. They replaced the sensor and it didn't clear the code. I called them today to find out what is going on. The service guy at Lund in Glendale, AZ. said the SDM computer has to be replaced. He has one coming next day air. It will be here tomorrow. I was wondering if anyone else has been hardcore off roading yet? Has anyone had airbag light problems? I have the rollover airbag system. I was told this is a great feature for off-roading. Is this going to happen every time I go? Four Wheeling was the whole reason for me buying a H3. I love my HUMMER, I hope they are able to fix this problem for good. I don't want to be without my truck every time I decide to go 4 wheeling. This is the 2nd time the light went on. The first time it reset itself. On the bright side, they gave me another H3 to drive while mine is in for service. It's a stripped base model, but it still is a HUMMER. I am going to the same hill to see if the airbag light in the rental comes on. Hahaha I will keep everyone updated. Tim

[VENT}Well, tomorrow is here and the SDM computer is not. I want my truck back. It has been there three days. I am not real happy with their service department. My service guy (Dirk) said he would call me right back, 3 times. He has never called me back yet. I have spoken with him 4 times, and every time I had to call him. I was told, he was going to order this SDM mod. on Tuesday, and get it next day aired, then he said, it didn't get ordered for some reason, it will be ordered on Wednesday and we will have it next day aired again. It's Thursday, and I was informed TODAY, the SDM module couldn’t be shipped by air. It has something to do with, it is pressure sensitive. lol It has to be shipped by ground. It won't be here until the middle of next week. Their communication between the mechanics and the service department is non-existent, as well as, the communication between the service department and the customer. Don’t get me wrong, I love my HUMMER, I just want it fixed. It only has 900 miles on it. This is the last time I will go to Lund for anything. I haven’t received their survey yet, but I will fill it out as soon as it comes!! [/VENT] Tim
Thanks for letting me vent.

Sorry to hear you are going through all this BS. Maybe someone like fstop will be able to confirm if the SDM can or can't be shipped via air. I would be irate if they just gave you a line about having to ship ground to save on shipping charges

Yes, it is a small computer and can be shipped by air, if requested by the dealer. There are parts warehouses in Salt Lake City, somewhere in Calif, and Denver. Not sure about GM parts and their policies in shipping by air.

I guess my biggest worry is, "is it really the SDM." These computers are pretty iron clad, and not a large replacement item, except after a crash when it is mandatory to replace.

I sure hope the tech did the diagnosis correctly, but I have to say that if they replaced the rollover sensor and that did not work, it appears they are replacing parts and not diagnosing the system. The diagnosis charts in the service manual are pretty good, and if followed correctly should lead the tech to the problem, which could be a sensor, the SDM, a wire, or even a loose connector.

Thanks for all the replies. I just got back from picking up my H3 at Lund. I guess they figured, if they weren’t able to fix my brand new truck, they would just dent the passenger door for me. UN-F-ING believable. I get there, they have it parked out front of the Service Department with the passenger door facing the bushes and tree. I thought the way it was parked was kinda strange. I did a walk around and sure enough, a dent in the door right under the mirror. I remained calm, as much as I wanted to smash this guys teeth on the curb. I’m sure it was an accident, but the fact that it happened, doesn’t make me too happy. When I pointed the dent out to him, he said, oh yea, aahh, I don’t know how that happened. He assured me when I bring my truck in a couple weeks for the SDM mod., they will fix the dent. In the mean time I am driving around in a new H3 with under 1000 miles on it, with a dent in the door and the airbag light on. Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy.
f5fstop, is there anything I can do to get the SDM here any sooner? Is there anyone to talk to about this, other than the dealer?

What would REALLY piss me off about it is based on what you said, it sounds like they tried to hide it

They just hoped you would leave an notice later and there would be nothing you could do about it.

Exactly! The way he was acting, I think he knew all about it and wanted me to leave w/o looking at it.

They released a vehicle without the airbag system working? That kind if liability if there was ever an accident is enough to close a dealer.
I would first call customer assistance and tell them the dealer released a vehicle that has an inoperative SIR system. Next, I would call the owner and, being the smart ass that I am, ask him how much insurance he has in case there is an accident and injuries that would have been prevented by an operating SIR system.
I would then take it immediately to another dealer and report this dealer to the BBB. I would also report them to the state's auto board.
Understand, most people who know me, would tell you I'm one nasty SOB. In fact, I would probably do the majority of these confrontations in an area with plenty of future purchasers in hearing range.
I would be polite, but sarcastic, no threats, just the facts, and let them be the asses in front of their future customers.
Just mentioning that they cannot fix the air bag system, and have no regard for your, or your families well-being would make me walk as a future customer. Don't forget to mention they admit damaging the vehicle while in service.
