I've heard insiders talking about keys becoming a thing of the past. I'd like to see them make the remote key fob work 100% reliable first though.

Lotsa new cars are made that way. With remotes becoming universal, it won't be long 'til they charge extra for the key hole.

If a GM vehicle (all models of that vehicle) comes standard with keyless entry, there is only one key cylinder and that is in the driver's door. Been like that for a few years (since 2003 I believe). However, if a car has a model (example, Saturn ION base does not offer Keyless entry) that does not have a standard keyless entry system, it will have all the door and truck lock cylinders.
Yes, it does cut the costs of a vehicle since it is redundant, and surveys showed, that most people never use a key anymore, just the remote.
The newer Vettes (C6 model), and Cadillacs have no key cylinder on the drivers door or for the ignition. They sense the FOB, the door unlocks when the drivers touches the door handle and pulls, and you just press a button to start the vehicle.

Research has a voice activated door and ignition system; but there are too many glitches in voice recognition systems at this time.

Someday, you will be able to walk up to the car, say open, get in, say start, say drive, etc., and drive away.

It also means when we go to shave the body it will cost less (no rear, no back, no passenger front)

The H2 has a driver's side key cylinder and comes with standard keyless entry. Of course, it's really built by AMG...

guess you havent checked out the c6 you just need the fob in your pocket . it sends an electrical signal thru your body to door handle and unlocks to your touch - key in pocket push the start button most gm vehicles have done away with all but drivers door tumbler . gm has done this for quite a while my 2k hardtop only has driver tumbler push unlock once drivers door opens twice for pass third time trunk pops . you can also push trunk on fob.
