The city of San Antonio is making moves to purchase
the privately owned areas that make up 'The Den'
and part of what they are doing is finally enforcing
the ban on motor vehicles in public park property.
That includes motorcycles and ATVs as well
This is my second confirmed notice of the area known as the den being off limits:
" Tim Adams warns that you will get a ticket if you are caught in
the Den. He entered from the Ingram side this weekend. 200 yards
inside the Den, hidden by brush were SA Park Police in a variety of
vehicles. This includes an ATV. He was written up for not having
the vehicle inspected or registered, and was warned that other
tickets could have been written. It seems that the Park Police are
trying to make a point. It may be the end of the Den as we have known
it. "

Gee, so it's ok for homeless and criminals but not tax-paying, law-abiding citizens just looking for some fun?
This city is so backasswards sometimes.
So now what - off-roading at the mall with James????

When the president of the local jeep club contacted
the city parks department and offered to help mark off
the areas in question that were off limits he was informed
that the entire area would be off limits and that several
residents had been complaining of the damage to the natural
habitat and 'blah blah blah'...
it was pretty clear that the area was going to stay 'unwheelable'
and that was going to be that. They were not very friendly
when discussing it with him - essentially they treated him like
a common criminal.

I don't know SA and I don't know the location of the den but is it possible for a private entity to buy the area from the city?

What a load.
Yeah, we're causing so much damamge to a useless flood plain. All this time I thought erosion and high water were to blame.
I understand their discontent with the a$$holes who dump roofing material out there but I don't see a substantial impact from offroaders. I guess everyone gets lumped together. . .

Wonder if it would help if we got Ken Batchelor involved?

the batchelor folks won't give a sh!t...that won't
help them sell hummers. just like the jeep dealer
won't care, or anybody else for that matter.
this is why they had such small turnouts in Austin
for the public meetings on stream and waterway closures
2 years ago, and now it is illegal to be in a public
waterway with a motor vehicle. aka: you can't drive up
the dried out stream beds - that is how we lost eagle rock
and 'the slab' offroading areas - that were great for
camping and light offroading...apathy.
this is why we keep losting all kinds of freedoms
everyday in this country...people don't care unless it
affects them directly - and in the pocket book.
I am going to sell my offroad rig and just get a good
daily driver...maybe a ford focus...or something
even smaller like a mini...

That sucks. You would figure in Texas there is enough land for everyone. After all, the place is huge. Too bad...

I figure I can just pop the mini in 'the boot'
of your hummer! hahaha
the only true 'state provided' OHV area is
still Gilmer if I'm not mistaken - a nice 7 hour
drive from here...when it isn't closed because
the neighbors complain of the noise anyway.
they were supposedly looking at property just
west of San Antonio - but it fell through because
the local ranchers there got up in arms about
people scaring all their animals and chasing the
cows with jeeps etc...

How accessible is Leon Creek?
Heck, I say we make our own places. There are tons of drainage areas with decent rocks around SA. Keep playing till you get caught, then use the "I didn't know THIS place was off limits" excuse and go find another spot.

Leon creek dumps into the den - there are several access
points just past Grissom Road - and the rocks
can be very
challenging if you want them to be. I have run up leon creek
from the den before all the way to just past prue road
but that end of the creek is now a green belt - the last time
we went that way we got to drive next to some lady walking
her dog in the park - don't think they would see the humor
in that one! lol...plus the creek past prue passes through
a FEDERAL bird sanctuary...probably not smart to go there either...
but you could exit at La Cantera shopping center and hook up
with JAMES...
