ok so here it is... i have been reading about door skins and all the manufacturers say they are like a fridge magnet. so why do all the posts talk about placing tape around the edges. i could understand on the leading edge if you are going to be driving at a high speed, but i dont think that off roading will reach that kind of speeds. i would understand if say you are at the hotel and tape them up for the drive to the off road location, but why not install them upon arrival.

Little fingers like to jump out and get underneath them. I.E. limbs, rocks etc...

Make life easy on yourself. When you get the skins take the time to fit them. I actually trimmed mine all the way around so I could get the tape on the edges easier. It's not that easy getting the tape in the front door jam.
BTW, they seem to lose their magnetism.

What they said.
The magnetic pull is, for some reason, not as strong as I expected it to be and I DID lose one on the freeway on the way to a run once. I went back and FOUND IT on the side of the freeway and it was unscathed! They are tough! I tape 'em now.

With regard to putting the skins on when you get where you are going. it would be i'll advised to apply them unless the truck is absolutly CLEAN anything that gets between the Skin and the trucks paint will take on the role of sandpaper to your paint. Put em on a clean truck and tape up the edges... my .02c worth

Wash the truck if you can before applying the skins. If you tape the leading edges you can drive there and back without worrying. DO NOT slide the skins across the paint.
If you don't want to apply them early, fine. Just do us all a favor and pre-fit them before the trip. I'll help you with any trimming or taping later.

Yes - clean is VERY important! It also helps if the truck and skins are warm. They are much more pliable and "mold" into the lines of the rig better. I tried applying them on a cold morning last time - it was a PITA!
