Don't waste your money on a contractor, go with an architect.

If you go with an Architect - don't go for flash or a big name. Architects, like any other professional, can get too full of themselves.

For a residential job, I would look to a design-build firm... check out this site (http://e-construct.net/Design/Design-Build.html)
