Just so you guys know I'm not much of a drinker either. Usually I never finish the first beer. Don't know if I scared you guys into thinking otherwise. Just wanted to be sure our rig didn't need to be free of it. I like to know any and all rules.

Seriously, I can't speak for anyone else but I have no objections to booze around the campfire or anywhere else outside the driver's seat. I don't drink because it makes me invisible then my kids get sceert. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

sigh - trying to post a pic. Laptop crashed yesterday and I had to wipe it clean and reload XP. Not a huge loss because it's brand new and I only lost pics that are still on my camera.
I'll reload them, resize and post in a bit.

Yeah, I really like that one, but it wasn't quite what I wanted and the price was so high you'd think it was made by Gobi! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I wanted a slightly more square and angled look - and a little more "beef." PM coming.
As for the gas cans - I think I would prfer the sceptors, especially with time being so short I don't want to try and fab holders or lay rubber on the rack before we go. I still hope to finish the permanent install on my CB before our trip.
I had an idea - if you feel comfortable with it you could give me your address in PM, I could order, pay for and have them shipped to you, That way less hassle for you. I found a good price on them ($30 ea) at a place right here near me. The owner sounded frustrated that he couldn't sell them to me.
Either method is fine with me. I could order or I could give you his website and phone number. I think at this point it would be better to order via phone to be sure any color I order is in stock and ready to ship.

http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Sorry! Got side-tracked....okay, here's what I have:
The permit has been approved - for "UP TO TWELVE vehicles"!!!! But not to worry - I talked with the NPS and have it amended and approved for 15. But we lucked out with our arbitrary cap! Anything over 15 requires "extending the environmental review." What's that mean? More money and much more time. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif So all is well - we are permitted with permission for up to 15 vehicles. Whew! Not that it really much matters - I've spent days out there and have NEVER seen a Ranger. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Also, there are two pages of crap, er information and rules, etc., which every participant is supposed to be made aware of and agree to. No way I'm typing two pages of this stuff on here. I'm gonna try posting it as an attached jpeg and see if y'all can read it.
If you take nothing else from this info, know this: DER TORTOISES ARE STRICTLY VERBOTEN!!! Don't touch 'em. Don't play with 'em. Don't run 'em over. Try not to look at them and for God's sake, don't eat 'em, k? Now the Mohave indians had a cool way of placing the tortoise upside down in the campfire and making turtle soup right in the shell. Don't do that. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

My personal favorite is #18. Fires may be built only in areas where fires have previously been built. But no evidence of a campfire may remain. SO HOW DO YOU KNOW WHERE A CAMPFIRE WAS PREVIOUSLY BUILT?? http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Basically, any and all good campsites along the road have some evidence of pre-existing fire rings - so it's not a problem - I just find the juxtaposition of the ideas funny. And besides, once one has a campfire roaring away, how would they establish that there had not been one there previously???
Also, you should know that this is for the portion (a large portion) of the ride that takes place under the purview of the NPS. Rasor OHV is NOT such a portion and is a "free play" area. Yipee! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Sean -- I'm considering painting my fuel cans simply because I don't care for the way red looks. But thinking in terms of safety and reflecting on a firefighting school Uncle Sam put me through a zillion years ago (you know, when red was still a commie color), I think emergency workers are trained to know red can = gasoline.

I think if they saw a non-standard color (i.e. not red, yellow, or blue), then a reasonable safety-oriented assumption is that it's gas or diesel. My guess is they'd make that assumption even if all they saw was a blue water can.

Update: Beav and I have reservations at the Days Inn in needles for fri night. Who else is staying there?
Leaving my house at approx 1:30.
Meeting HB on I5 at 2:30ish
Picking up Beavis in Barstow at god knows what time - it's 398 miles from where I meet HB to Barstow.
Barstow to Needles is approx 120 miles.
Of course we are Camping Sat night. Beav even went to REI and bought some near gear! Bastard! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
What are peoples plans for dinner Sat night? Campfire cooking? Driving out to a restaurant? Personally I will be staying in camp.
On a side note - Beav pointed me to a web article that says we could easily die out there. Pretty cool huh? http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I plan to take a warm shower, put on fresh clothes and enjoy the fine eats at either the County Store or The Mad Greek (pretty good gyros).
Don't blame you for staying in camp. I would if I were camping. Can't beat dutch oven stew on a campfire.

The Mad Greek is a restuarant in Baker, or at least it was when I was hiking around Cima Dome and Kelbaker and Cedar Canyon Roads 4-5 years ago.
Perhaps because its one of the few restuarants in the middle of nowhere... that's why the food tasted surprisingly good after a day of hiking in June when it was considerably hotter...
And there beer was very cold...
