UPDATE - UPDATE - UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!
We are changing the plan - we will start at where the Mojave Road crosses the 95 on SATURDAY morning and finish at Afton Cyn and the 15 SUNDAY afternoon!!!
I've been wanting to plan this for some time, and now I have to do it on the same dates as the Pismo run dammit!
Oh well, anyone not going to Pismo is welcome to join us on REALLY fun and historical 2 day journey through the Mojave desert from near the CA/NV border to Barstow CA on the old Mojave Road. Parts of it ARE a dirt road. Parts of it are little more than old wagon wheel tracks through the scrub. It's about 100 miles - or a little more depending on where we exit. And it is NOT for the faint of heart - the wheeling is relatively easy, but the overnight camp may well be COLD! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
The worst obstacles are some areas of really deep and fine blow sand, some narrow door scraping passages through stunning Joshua Tree forests (though an H1 has been known to navigate thru them) and the infamous Soda Dry (NOT) Lake. If the mud is too severe at the lake, we may bypass it - there is an easy (but longish) bypass.
This old stagecoach/mail buggy route is incredible - going from watering hole to watering hole (and they weren't that easy to come by in the desert) there is a spring or well every 20 to 30 miles.
There are outstanding photo ops - you can take a pic of you and your Hummer on the same spot as a late 1800's photo of some cowboys and their wagon. Or at the site of the last classic gunfight of the old west at a (still functioning) windmill type well called Government Holes. And Ancient American Indian Petroglyphs are to be found all over the place by the springs! But the best is where the "road" ends - at Afton Canyon. It is called the "Grand Canyon of the Mojave" and it is spectacular.
It'll be a really fun, relaxing, easy run and all are welcome - H1's, H2's, H3's, Jeeps, ANYTHING and EVERYONE. There's a very cool campsite and many opportunities to exit the "road" and leave early if you wish.
Search for "Mojave Road" and there are tons of information pieces out there.
The current idea is this:
Meet at the intersection of the Mojave Road the the 95 Saturday morning. (2/11/06)
Camp along the "road" Sat. night at Razor OHV area
Continue along the road thru Afton Canyon and be out on pavement by Sunday afternoon (2/12/06) for everyone's trip home!
PLEASE PM me if you want to join us!
What you'll want to bring at a minimum:
A capable 4x4 vehicle
At least one good spare tire
Jack and basic tools
Sleeping bags and a tent (or a back-of-Hummer setup!)
Lots of food and water
A full tank of gas
Flashlight or lantern
Warm clothes and good hiking shoes
A sense of humor and a spirit of adventure http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
What you should have as well:
A winch and recovery gear
A GPS (or map and compass)
A CB radio
Firewood and starter
Good camping equipment and chairs!
Dennis Casebier's book "The Mojave Road" (available on line)
A still and video camera
Some friends and/or family http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
I'd love a big turnout - but this will be fun even if it is only a few of us! Again, all vehicles are welcome - so if you have Jeeper friends, etc., bring them too!
PM ME!!!!!!!!!!!

I can definitely do the Saturday part of the run. If that's all I do, I'll head north to Vegas from Cima or if there's access to I-15 from the trail, bolt from there.
I'll talk to my wife and see if she can tolerate a night of tent camping. ( Before I do, though, I'll check and see if my inverter can drive the espresso maker. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ) Or maybe I'll leave her at home and bring the daughters. Not sure but I'll work on it.
Before the date gets any closer, have you considered changing the dates so it doesn't conflict with the Pismo event? I imagine that's tough competition for the attention of the SoCal crowd.

You know, I went to Pismo once, and prob won't be back. First the H2 is not great on such soft sand. Two, after the first hour, everything looks the same, so it wasn't even scenic. I'm fine driving, but my kids were bored at the end.
I'm guessing the Mojave trail will be a lot more interesting!
Rodster, how many cups does your espresso maker makes?? http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yes - there is a hotel in the area! If you do Saturday, you can exit just a couple miles north of our campsite to the 15 and then just about 20 miles south to Barstow and hotels - and come back and meet us in the AM to finish on Sunday!
BUT - if your brewing the java - you have to stay in the desert with us.

You don't say? That's a tempting tidbit right there!
I talked to the wife and as expected, she isn't one bit interested in camping. Strange, she used to tolerate camping before the kids came along. I have to think she still has her butane-powered curling iron. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
Anyway, I'll talk with her about staying in Barstow. Could be she'll find it easier to just let me off my leash for a weekend.
On a side note, I'm kinda bummed to hear the H2 doesn't do so well at Pismo. We'll likely buy a home in SLO this summer and may move there full time in the next few years. Pismo has been in the back of my mind as a fun playground.
Ooooo, wait. This could be my ticket to a sand rail. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

If all else fails, can you just meet us Sunday morning at Razor OHV area for the last twenty miles on Sunday?

Any idea what time you'd like to meet on Saturday and launch again on Sunday? Saturday ETA at Razor camp spot?

Yeah! Outstanding. Okay, I'll have a lot more info tomorrow (tonight is map night http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif) - but a rough idea? Okay - meeet at the 95 and Mojave Road about 8 or 9 Sat. morning and take off immediately. Get to Razor OHV before nightfall. That'll be a chore, but it IS doable. If we get to Soda Lake and it is getting dark, we'll camp before the lake and attack it first thing in the morning, reaching the other side (which is the Razor OHV) right away.
Anyone meeting us at Razor will want to backtrack just a couple of miles to Travellers Cairn. It has a HUGE rock cairn with a plaque which is a closely guarded secret - http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif - the only way to know what it says is to get to it and read it! From there it's only about 20 miles to beautiful Afton Canyon and the exit.
Dozzat answer your questions? I tend to ramble. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Meet Sat morning at 95 and the Mojave Road between 8 and 9am. Arrive Razor either just before nightfall or first thing Sun morning. Depart Razor about 9 or 10am Sun - and everyone can be out and on their way home sometime Sunday afternoon!

Regardless and thinking out loud, I'll look at my maps and figure out where in relation to the likely camp spot the turnoff to Barstow (hotels) is.
The times are doable. We'll have a 90 minute drive south from Vegas with a stop at the Laughlin turnoff for gas (there's a fairly new gas station/mini mart at the intersection). My guess is, 8:30 is a reasonable meet time.
Any rattlesnakes near where you're planning to camp?

I'm in for at least Saturday and most likely Sunday. Frauenkommandant is undecided.
To complicate (but not confound) matters, one of my most valuable team members and her husband will be in town then from Chicago. They want to see the desert up close and personal so they may ride with me or we may rent a 4x4 for them to follow in. Or they may just take their rental car to Red Rock and hike.
Any more variables and I might just pack the tent and leave in the middle of the night! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
As for the GPS, I don't know your Garmin unit but if you're building your route in MapSource on your PC and them importing it, I can use that map file. I use a WinXP touch screen tablet PC and MapSource for navigation. No big deal on this if it doesn't work out -- I've already mapped the route from 95 to Cima. As long as you know where you're going, that's enough.
I'll be sending a PM your way shortly.

</div></BLOCKQUOTE>
Yeah, I'll be using Mapsource, so I'll send it to ya. Won't get to it tonight after all, though. I lent a book out with the coordinatesa and it was supposed to come back today but.....

For those that don't know the area, look in the middle of the map for the Mojave Road, which runs east/west. (For the navigationally challenged, that's left/right. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif)

For those coming in an H2, I highly recommend magnetic shields! There are one or two places on the "road" where some thick scrub and Joshua trees can do a lovely desert pinstriping without them.
If you don't have shields, don't sweat it - they'll buff out, and chicks dig scars.

You talking about the stretch west of mile 39 in Casebier's notes? Assuming so, if we have non-shielded trucks that prefer not to get pinstriped, there's a bypass to the south that connects with/becomes Cedar Canyon Road, which then reconnects with the Mojave Road around mile 49. Will that alt route bypass the scratch-and-sniff-sniff section?

For those of you that are going, regular old tape works fine. I've used Blue Painter's tape and all was great.
Rod, I trimmed our shields about 1/2" short all the way around so I could get the tape to find a surface. It's easier to get those front doors done.

Just wanted to pop in and say hello since I confirmed I will be joining you all. Looking forward to meeting everyone. I plan to drive to and stay in needles fri night. Anybody else coming down I5 on fri to get there? I'm trying to get my brother to join me but prying him out of his Dodge Ram can be difficult. Doesn't make much sense to drive both.
I have a magelin GPS unit that has surprised me with the unpaved roads that are preloaded on it. I'm going to look into downloading more detailed info tonight but I should be good there.
About the only thing on the list that I don't already have is a CB. Will one of the simple hand held kind be OK or should I go all out and put in a permanent unit? Any recommendations for a brand/model?

Racer-X, glad to see you can make it!
Between Mr. Bond(age) and me we have the GPS stuff covered. No need to spend time and money on your end unless you want to because it's fun. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
As for the CB, a handheld will probably do alright for this trip but you'll benefit long term from a permanent install. Many people here on the forum (self included) use the Cobra 75WXST. Info: http://www.cobra.com/index.php?page=shop/flypage&product_id=5&id=1
You really don't need a CB, though. A set of FRS/GMRS walkie talkies can be had at any electronics store. I got mine at Best Buy for $75. Cobra-12-Mile, 22-Channel FRS/GMRS 2-Way Radios (Pair)-PR4700-2WX
Most people in the group will probably use the walkie-talkies. Half the money, no install, real easy. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
If you do decide to get a portable CB, I have a magnetic mount external antenna you can borrow if you like. Let me know.

Man, that Cobra Rodster mentioned IS popular! That's what I'm using too. Haven't got around to the permanent install yet, since my temp fix works so damn well! I got a screw-on cig lighter adapter and use that at the end of the Cobra power leads. I plug it into the rear of the center console, put the unit under the driver's seat, and run the antenna wire up through the rear grab handle behind the driver's side headrest and out the top to the rack mounted antenna. Close the door on it and your good to go! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif The mic cord then runs between the center console and the driver's seat so the mic can sit on the top of the console. It works as well as a permanent install - and I just unplug it all and take it out when I'm not using it.
The Cobra 75WXST is outstanding. If I took the time to properly ground the antenna and tune the damn thing it'd be even better!

Been there, cringed that! I went down the passenger's side, thinking the driver's side had already been punished enough. In hindsight, the driver's side would have been much easier. Either side is pretty much the same run from the roof through the A-pillar but under the dash is a whole different game. Look under the passenger side and you'll see what I mean!

I'm told this will shoot through the metal chasis even better than through the glass. I should have no trouble finding a place to mount it.
Depending how much time I have I may do a temp set up like Sean did for now.

Our friend has dual 48"s mounted on spring mounts. When we follow him down an undulating trail, the phrase "Danger, Will Robinson...DANGER" keeps coming to mind. I kinda like the look. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif I went with a single 48 on a spring. Half the robot, so to speak.

A temp install may not get you the longest range possible but it'll be fine for the weekend. We'll all be near each other anyway.

Being so old fashioned that I still send text e-mails, http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif I was hesitant about the plastic ones. Where and how will you mount them? I would prefer steel, but was a little worried about the powder coat on my rack with metal cans...?

Yes indeed, brilliant minds think alike. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Home Depot and Lowes both carry thick rubber floor mats with drain holes in them. They're 3x3 and you can cut them into 1x1 squares. Attach to rack with plastic wire ties and you have a cushioned ride for anything metal. A ratchet strap holds the cans down.
That all now said, I also bought another, non-traditional fuel container. It's going to take some modifying to make it work but if it does, it'll be schweeet.
I have four plastic cans to keep gas in around the house. No stinkin' way would I carry those on my truck. Some plastic ones are good but mine ain't those. El Cheapos from HD.

Good show on the permit. How much of your money did they charge for the pleasure of driving on our land?

We could easily exceed that at the rate we're going.
I see a few on your list that were on my list, too, (like me, for example) but we can add at least three more at this time. They're not forum regulars. I still have a bunch of fence sitters, a few of which will likely come.
If we cap at 15, we'll probably end up with 10-12. Trucks break, plans change. A dozen is a nice size group. Big enough to be fun and diverse, small enough to get down the trail at a reasonably good pace.

I've read a whole bunch of web stuff about the Bun Boy Motel. Found a few blogs where people posted their observations, etc.
Bottom line, it's clean, next to a 24 hour coffee shop, has A/C and cable and you can park in front of your room. (Try doing that at the Bellagio!)
For those of us that are hoteling it, the Bun Boy is the Baker Bellagio. $64.20 per night for a single queen bed; $69.95 per night for two queen beds. Number is 760.733.4252. That's a new number -- the numbers on the web don't work. They changed the name, too. It's now the Country Store.

As far as when we hit Rasor OHV goes, there is a change in our schedule! Because of the # of rigs, I'm afraid we will take longer and not make it across the lake before nightfall (Rasor is on the far side of Soda Lake)soooooooooo... Is it, would it, can it be possible to start out a little earlier? Say 7:30 or 8 instead of 8:30? If not, it's okay - but it might mean a little less twilight driving. AND we will camp at 17 Mile Point - which is right at Kelbaker Road for those heading north to Rodster's Bun Boy Motel and Massage Parlor. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Wow, a 7:30 meet means a 0600 lift-off from Vegas. That's brutal! I'd have to get up at 4 to have any hope at all of a successful AM BM. I'm not saying no but dang ... http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
If we do meet at 8:30, what's your ETA at 17 Mile Point?
Rasor in the morn sounds like a plan. Looks like there's a lot to do there so a good night of sleep will be excellent.

We can easily keep the start at 8:30. The LAST thing I want to do is interfere with your AM BM. ROFLMFAO
IF we keep up a good head of steam, we SHOULD make it to Kelbaker Road (15 minutes from there to your gay bath house) just after nightfall. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif The last hour or so may be in twilight, or even in the dark, but it is nice, wide open, sandy wash and there'll be enough of us with good lights to make it not a problem don't you think?
It should be quite fun in the scawy scawy dawk.

Night driving is cool so long as you're in front and nobody behind has on the big lights. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Regardless, the stars will no doubt be great.
Oh wait! I just remembered ... I have a brand new night vision gizmo. I bet we'll see eyes looking back at us. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif I just got a camera adapter for it, too. Now all I need is a camera to adapt it to 'cause I know that big honkin' thing isn't going to fit my Canon digital. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif Could make for some great pics if I get all that figured out.
Gay bath house ... puhleeze. I'll remind you of that Sunday morning when the Vegas crew arrives bright-eyed and smelling like bathsoap and pancake syrup. If you're nice to me I might leave my Bumper Dumper with you on Saturday http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

If you're at all interested in the history of the wild west and the important role the Mojave Road has played over the centuries, $20 is well spent on Dennis Casebier's book (http://www.desertusa.com/web_cart/db/pages/5094.html). It's an outstanding guide to the area and includes maps and extensive trail notes.

BTW - (I'm so jazzed I can't sleep and I just keep typing LOL) here's a cool "historic site" example of The Road;
Shaw Pass is named after a Dr. Shaw who caught an unfortunate ride with the mail buggy and one Army escort. They were attacked by Indians. Dr. Shaw was shot with an arrow through the neck and died as they were escaping from the persuing Indians through the pass that thereafter bore his name. How cool izzat?

No, not a bad idea at all. Matter of fact, it'll be a great experience and will show you a little of what your new truck is capable of.
You'll need to take off the tube steps. Eight bolts each side and you're done. It'll take you 15 minutes at the most, less if you have air tools. The tube steps drastically cut down your clearance. Taking them off will make your truck look a lot better, too.

Re: Da List.
The 15 target number assumed we will have cancels, family emergencies, broken trucks, etc. Since any or all of those are probable, we should net between 10 and 12 trucks. That's a very nice number for a trail like this.
As others suggested, we should get absolute confirmation from those on the list. Once we have 15 solid, start a waitlist. If a spot opens up, the first person on the list is offered the option to upgrade (no obligation to take the offer) to the confirmed list.

Some things to consider ...
Trail conditions dictate how long the train is. For example, if parts of the trail are fine sand and there is little cross wind, to keep yourself out of the dust cloud of the truck in front of you (a very good idea) we all need to drive very slowly (boring) or we all need to hang back a quarter mile or more from the next truck.
Under those conditions, a 12 truck train is now 3 miles long. We want (need, really) radio communications between the lead and rear vehicles. Will we have it? Dunno. Depends on conditions.
If we encounter an obstacle that requires spotting, more is not merrier.
There will likely be scenic spots along the way where we'll want to stop. Is there adequate room for parking or if it's a dead-end or hill climb, enough room for all trucks to park and enough room for U-turns?
In a long train the lead vehicles get to see critters. "Hey, a pack of wild hyenas at 11 o'clock!" is good news for the front. It's a bummer in the back because the critters will surely be gone.
I'm not being negative, just practical. An army of Hummers is fun to think about but not necessarily fun on the trail.

Bring it, with this many truck and the location of this run, you can never go wrong with having something and never using it.

Excellent point and I like the way you think. Over-prepared is a good thing but I do have a tendency to go overboard. After loading spare parts, recovery gear, fluids and tools, I don't have much room left for personal items. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I HIGHLY recommend airing down for this run. There are some rocks to crawl over and LOTS of sand - the deep blowing powdery stuff. I actually ran the whole road the first time without airing down. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif It was so much easier the second time at about 25psi.

I have bad news on the TuxifieD front. NPS says that, since I hold the permit for this run, any participant under the age of 18 would need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian - or have a signed waiver from a parent or legal guardian, in which case they would be MY responsibility. Tux seems like a great guy - but I can't take on that responsibilty. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
Oh well, hopefully we will get to know him on another run somewhere sometime soon. He has a lot of respect from me for all he has accomplished at the ripe old age of 16 and I WOULD like to meet him and wheel with him. It just ain't practical at this time, on this run.

Sean -- 25 psi it is. My Staun deflators are already calibrated. Now I just gotta get the C02 tank filled. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

You guys are hooligans!
Not that this is particularly relevant to you Californiates but, I'm the newly-appointed/volunteered Hummer X Club coordinator in Nevada. Trail Duty is the official sponsor for the HXC. Because the NV HXC chapter is involved in this event AND mostly because all you left-coasters are really cool people, Phil volunteered the door prizes. Here's what we have ...
Two recovery kits. Each includes a Trail Duty gear bag, two 3/4" shackles, a pair of leather-faced gloves, a folding shovel and a 3"x30' recovery strap. MSRP each kit: $169.
We also have 4 sets of 3/4" shackles to give away and two Trail Duty T-shirts.
Since random prizes are only good for a few, the Nevada chapter of the Hummer X Club is also gathering a few other prize goodies to ensure everybody goes home with a souvenir or two. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
As the event gets closer we'll figure out the conditions and time/place for prize awards. I'm pretty sure it won't be near a late night campfire!
Thanks, Phil! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
