Be more afraid of the black box (really silver with a yellow sticker) that monitors your speed....
When the module is disconnected, whether you have service or not, the system will probably set a code and turn on a light. Not sure, but the module is in the serial bus circuit, and all the computers check on each other to make sure they are healthy.
