I have a bike cable with a padlock through the carrier and the wheel on mine. No problems so far.

I used to use it to secure the spare on my C1500 pickup, had that for 7 years with no issues either.

It's really not all that difficult to secure it. I just asked the fine folks at Hall Hummer for a few locking lug nuts.

Locking Lug nuts are cheap and hard as hell to remove if you don't have the key..
