We have a lot of stuff and don't go out in the snow due to our location: First aid kit, tools, lighter, knife, axe....stuff we have gathered if in an emergency while out on the trail.



but I found these tips in an article about the recent story.



  • Before you venture out, assemble a winter survival kit: Flashlight and extra batteries. Candles and coffee tin. Matches/lighter. Blankets/warm clothing. Granola bars, candy, sugar cubes. First aid kit. Booster cables. Shovel and tow rope. Flares or other signal aids.
  • If you're trapped in your car, keep calm. The No. 1 rule is to stay in the car unless there is a house or other building close by.
  • Put your car to use: a hubcap or sun visor can be used as a shovel; seat covers can be used as blankets; and floor mats can block wind.
  • Engine oil burned in a hubcap creates a smoke signal visible for miles. To start, prime with a little gasoline, which you can get from your tank with a wire and tissue or rag.
  • Don't forget your horn. It can be heard from as far as a mile downwind. (Three long blasts, 10 seconds apart, every 30 minutes, is a standard distress signal.)
  • For warmth and signal, burn a tire (but not on the car!). Release the air pressure and use gasoline, oil or any other means to ignite it.
  • Run the motor and heater for about 10 minutes per hour, opening one window slightly to let in fresh air. To reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, make sure snow is not blocking the exhaust pipe.
  • Clap your hands, move your arms and legs or do other exercises to keep circulation going. But avoid overexertion. Cold weather puts added strain on the heart.
  • Tie a brightly colored cloth to the antenna as a signal to rescuers and raise the hood of the car (if it is not snowing).
  • Take turns on watch if there is more than one person. If you are alone, do not go to sleep. You will be less vulnerable to cold-related health problems.
  • Wrap your entire body, including your head, in extra clothing, blankets, or newspapers.
  • Do not eat unmelted snow because it will lower your body temperature.
