ric, are you saying the screen is washed out? If so and if you have adjusted the controls on the front/side of the monitor i.e contrast, brightness. If nothing is working or making any difference, look and see if you can adjust the gamma/brightness from your video card.

Right click on the desktop, choose properties,Settings,Advanced,then the tab for your video card.

In there you should be able to adjust the color and brightness, gamma, contrast. If adjusting these has no effect I'd venture to guess you're video card has gone bad.

On some monitors there are several different preset gamma settings that you may be able to toggle threw from the controls on the side or front depending on the monitor.
